![]() | Waugh twins reach century ![]() Steve and Mark Waugh were not aware of the milestone The Waugh twins will complete a remarkable century stand when the first Test between Australia and South Africa gets under way on Friday. It will be Steve and Mark's 100th Test together making them the first set of brothers to achieve such a feat. Typically neither was aware of the milestone until being informed by journalists this week.
"It's very surprising. I would have thought we'd only have played about 60 or 70 but time does fly," said Steve, the older of the two by three minutes. "But we don't want to get too carried away about it at the moment but later on when we retire and look back on it, it will be significant. "It's really just nice for the family, for mum and dad - all the sacrifices they made with us growing up." Only 41 sets of brothers have played at least one Test match together and, of those, only the Waughs are twins. Zimbabwean pair Andy and Grant Flower are second on the list on 54 Tests. Steve, who will be playing his 143rd Test, made his debut six years before Mark, who is winning his 120th cap. Ironically Mark came into the side against England at the Adelaide Oval in 1990-91, at the expense of his brother.
They finally played together in the third Test against the West Indies a couple of months later. Since then they have shared nine century partnerships, including one of 197 in the fifth Test against England this year. Their biggest stand came at Kingston in 1995 when they put on 231 runs for the fourth-wicket to clinch Australia's first win in the West Indies in 22 years. The brothers are not publicly close - something Steve attributes to a fierce rivalry as they grew up. And despite being twins, their early internationals together were marked by a series of infamous run outs, including one which left Steve stranded on 99. Other brothers to have played Test cricket together Jeff and Martin Crowe (34 Tests for New Zealand) and Ian and Greg Chappell (four Tests for Australia). But the Waughs are out on their own when it come to cricket's most enduring family affair. | Ton twinsSend your tributes to the Waugh brothers
