Gayle set to play in opening ODI

West Indies skipper Gayle is ranked third in the world in ODIs

Skipper Chris Gayle is on course to make a surprise return for West Indies in Friday's opening one-day international against England.

Gayle had been expected to miss the first few matches of the five-game series after injuring a hamstring in the final Test in Trinidad.

But after treatment, Gayle has been named in a 13-man squad for the opening two matches in Georgetown, Guyana.

West Indies will be without seamer Jerome Taylor, who has a calf strain.

Gayle currently lies third in the International Cricket Council one-day batting rankings and will take over the captaincy from Denesh Ramdin, who guided West Indies to an emphatic six-wicket victory in Sunday's Twenty20 international at the Queen's Park Oval.

West Indies one-day squad (for first two matches): Chris Gayle (capt), Denesh Ramdin (wkt), Lionel Baker, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Nikita Miller, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith.
