Captain Nadine George in action at the 2005 Women's World Cup |
West Indies women have named 11 players new to international cricket in a squad of squad of 16 for their tour to Ireland, the Netherlands and England. The squad includes six teenagers, the youngest of whom, all-rounder Deandra Dottin, is only 16. West Indies will play nine one-day internationals and three Twenty20 games during the entire trip. They will be their first international fixtures since the Women's World Cup in South Africa three years ago. One of the survivors from that tournament, 39-year-old batter Nadine George, has been named captain for the tour. And coach Sherwin Campbell believes the trip will provide vital experience before next year's World Cup in Australia. "This is a young team, but a very focused group of girls who are committed to what they are doing," he said. "We are looking at the development of the players as individuals and also as a team. We want to see the girls improving on their personal best performances and we also want to form a cohesive unit." They will play three one-dayers, the first next Tuesday, and one Twenty20 game in Ireland before crossing to mainland Europe for the Dutch leg of the tour. It concludes with a double-header against England on 11-12 July at Loughborough University. West Indies squad: N George (capt), M Aguilleira, K Alexander, D Dottin, A Fletcher, S-A King, L Kirby, DA Lewis, A Mohammed, C Nation, J Nero, G Seetahai, S Selman, D Small, C Taitt, S Taylor.
