Gayle scored a century in the defeat by South Africa |
Ramnaresh Sarwan denied that the West Indies had not taken the World Twenty20 seriously after his side were knocked out of the tournament on Thursday. The Windies lost to hosts South Africa in Tuesday's opening match and were then beaten by Bangladesh on Thursday.
Captain Sarwan said: "We have no-one to blame but ourselves.
"We were very eager and excited about the tournament but I don't think we executed our plans very well, we didn't bowl well and you saw how we fielded."
He said his team had to learn the lessons from their disappointing displays.
"It is a matter of us going back and working hard," he said.
"One of the things I've stressed since I became captain is consistency and that is something we need to focus on.
"It's important that when we get back home we work on our game because we have a tour coming up to South Africa in a few months."
Sarwan explained that the majority of the squad were not guaranteed a place, despite the relative lack of current talent in the Caribbean.
"There are always opportunities," he said. "I don't think anyone's place is cemented in the team apart from Chris [Gayle] and Shiv [Chanderpaul]. It's a matter of players doing well in the domestic competition and anyone would be eligible for selection."
