Lara could pass 300 ODIs during the World Cup |
West Indies captain Brian Lara has announced he intends to extend his Test career into his forties. Lara will definitely quit one-day internationals after the World Cup.
"I'm only 37," he said. "A lot of players stretch their career into their forties, there's a lot of work to do to get West Indies cricket back on track.
"Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath had the luxury of bowing out at the top of their game, but also of leaving a team that was the best in the world."
 | The players are confident of their ability to perform at such a huge event |
Lara has 11,953 Test runs to his name and 34 centuries, as well as the world record Test score of 400.
In addition, he has played 290 ODIs, scoring 10,136 runs and 19 hundreds.
However, Lara has seen his team decline from the most powerful team in world cricket when he first came into the side in 1990 to perennial strugglers in the Test arena.
And Lara told Sport magazine: "Now is not the time to talk about details such as the infrastructure of the game and funding - that will come later.
"But all I can do is play my part on the field. What we have to do is create a greater number of match-winners and spread the responsibility.
"The team that wins the World Cup is going to be a team of players who can get themselves out of trouble if they lose their core performers.
"I'm quietly confident we can win it, and I think the players are confident of their ability to perform at such a huge event."
