Brian Lara is among the big names missing from the new squad |
West Indies have named an inexperienced squad for the tour to Sri Lanka after talks aimed at settling a sponsorship dispute collapsed. Only three of the 13 players originally chosen signed the tour contracts issued by the West Indies board.
And the other 10, including Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan, have now been left out.
The new 14-man party, to be led by Shivnarine Chanderpaul, contains six players with no Test experience.
The announcement of the replacement squad came only hours after the players' association, Wipa, had claimed there was "substantial agreement on the way forward".
West Indies will play two Tests in Sri Lanka, the first starting on 13 July, and take part in a triangular one-day series which also involves India.
If they had cancelled the tour because of the unresolved dispute, the WICB could have faced a fine of up to 1.1m under International Cricket Council regulations.
The only three players remaining from the original squad are Chanderpaul, fast bowler Daren Powell and new wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin.
 | The contracts row has descended into a fiasco |
Many of the new names selected are already in Sri Lanka as part of the West Indies A team.
But A team captain Daren Ganga later claimed some of his team-mates had been pressured into signing contracts by the board.
He claimed they initially supported the stance of the senior players but told cricinfo.com: "We had situations where guys were pressured one-on-one as well to sign a contract. It undermined the entire trust of the team."
The latest developments have not gone down well with Sri Lanka Cricket officials, who believe the absence of Lara and other star players will affect ticket sales and TV revenue.
"We are disappointed. But the truth is it's an internal matter and there's nothing we can do about it," said Jayantha Dharmadasa, chairman of the SLC interim committee.
"We looked at the possibility of postponing the series, but it was not possible because of a hectic schedule."
WICB chief executive Roger Brathwaite insisted they could not afford the latest tour fees "demand" put forward by Wipa.
"We did everything in our power to conclude these negotiations, but unfortunately the Players' Association found almost all suggested meeting dates inconvenient," he said.
Brathwaite claimed the players would be well paid for the tour.
"Apart from the guaranteed sponsorship fees of US $50,000, there is available, a further US $250,000 that can be earned by their performances.
"This incentive fits in perfectly with the Board's attempt to move towards a performance based payment structure."
Each player will also receive match fess of up to US $6,300 per Test and up to US $3,800 per one-day international appearance.
"A relatively junior player could therefore earn approximately US $32,000 over the six weeks of the tour if the team is successful, while a senior player could earn US $40,000," Brathwaite added.
