Smith's injury was diagnosed as a partially torn meniscus |
South Africa captain Graeme Smith has undergone surgery after damaging his left knee during the World Cup. He suffered the injury while fielding against England and aggravated it in the semi-final, when they lost to Australia by seven wickets.
"I will follow medical advice before making any decisions to play again.
"We have another trying season ahead and preparation for that is the priority. I want to make sure I have fully recovered," said Smith.
South Africa are due to travel to Belfast in June for one-day games against Ireland and India.
More importantly, however, they will host the first Twenty20 World Championship in September and will take no chances with Smith's fitness before that tournament.
Team physio Shane Jabaar said: "We're not intending to accelerate his return to playing cricket until we are satisfied he has fully recovered.
"We will have a check up with the surgeon and will take into consideration how Graeme's body has reacted to the surgery."
Smith has been captain of the South African side since 2003 and has so far led the team in 45 Test matches, just eight short of Hansie Cronje's national record, and 91 one-day internationals.
The 26-year-old was recently awarded a new two-year contract, together with coach Mickey Arthur.
