Peterson's exuberant assault made a mess of the stumps |
South Africa's Robin Peterson has been given an official reprimand after smashing the stumps following their dramatic World Cup win over Sri Lanka. The Protease scraped home by one wicket after Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga had dismissed four batsmen in four balls.
Peterson pleaded guilty to breaching a section of the players' code of conduct relating to abuse of ground equipment.
"I accepted that it was a momentary mistake in the heat of the moment," said match referee Jeff Crowe.
"However, all players have a responsibility to maintain the highest standard of behaviour, no matter what the situation - that is part and parcel of being a high-profile sportsman - and hitting the stumps with the bat is not acceptable to me.
"As well as stressing that point to Robin, I also explained that his action could easily have damaged a very expensive and highly sensitive piece of television equipment, the stump camera," Crowe added.
A reprimand is the minimum penalty for the offence and Peterson escaped the additional punishment of a fine of up to 50% of his match fee.
He edged the winning runs against Sri Lanka after his side had slumped from 206-5 to 207-9.
