Ray Jennings says his record should count for a lot as South Africa prepare to name their next coach on Thursday. It is widely expected Jennings will be sacked and replaced with Mickey Arthur, even though the team have won 12 of the 14 one-dayers under his guidance.
"I could write a chapter on how each player has sharpened up and I believe I've added value," he said.
"The passion and energy levels, that were so lacking when I took over, are back."
Since taking over last October, Jennings' Test record, following the 2-0 win in the West Indies, is five wins against three losses - two to England and one in India - and five draws.
Jennings added: "The bowling attack has been a revelation because the big question was how we were going to take 20 wickets.
"Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel really stepped up and deserve a lot of credit.
"I don't want to be likeable, but losing. I have ruffled a few feathers...but sometimes good guys come second and everyone has said South Africa cricket's vision should be to be number one in the world."
Jennings and his players arrived home from the Caribbean on Wednesday after completing a Test and one-day double over West Indies.
The United Cricket Board of South Africa agreed Jennings had doen well and thanked him.
"Ray, you have done well, you have done us proud," said UCB president Ray Mali.
But if South African reports prove spot on, Jennings will be on his way, with 36-year-old Arthur, currently head coach of the Eastern Cape Warriors, taking his place.
