Asif is currently detained in Dubai but Pakistan insist he is innocent |
Mohammad Asif has been dropped from the Pakistan squad for the one-day tournament against Bangladesh and India and replaced by Suhail Khan. Paceman Asif, 25, is currently being detained at Dubai airport on suspicion of carrying illegal drugs. Pakistan chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed told BBC Urdu: "Since his return is uncertain at this point, we have replaced him with another bowler." Pakistan's first match is against hosts Bangladesh in Mirpur on 8 June. Suhail, 24, is a right-hand medium fast bowler who was among several youngsters blooded in the recent series against Bangladesh. He has picked up four wickets in the three one-dayers he has played so far. On Tuesday the chief operating officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shafqat Nagmi, insisted Asif would soon be released. Nagmi said the "entire matter was either a mistake or an innocent issue". He added: "Asif is in good spirits. He is looking forward to returning home soon." The triangular tournament will take place from 8-14 June in Bangladesh and Pakistan leave for Dhaka on Friday.
