Dav Whatmore said he was up to the challenge of coaching Pakistan after a two-hour interview for the post. The former Sri Lanka and Bangladesh coach was interviewed by a Pakistan Cricket Board panel as one of three possible replacements for Bob Woolmer.
The other contenders are Whatmore's fellow Aussies Richard Done and Geoff Lawson, interviewed earlier this week.
"I am confident given the chance I would do my best," said Whatmore, 53, previously linked to the India job.
"Every team poses different challenges and Pakistan would be a challenge, but this is a great opportunity working with a good board and a good team so I am eager on this.
"Pakistan is a top team and my priority will be to help them improve and produce the best results."

Whatmore's greatest moment as an international coach came in 1996 when he led Sri Lanka to World Cup glory.
He has coped with the difficult job at Bangladesh admirably, overseeing gradual improvement from the "Tigers", particularly in one-day cricket.
Whatmore will also meet the Pakistan team, who are currently training in Pakistan's Abbottabad for the July tour of Scotland.
"A good team learns from its mistakes and Pakistan will have to do that after a disappointing World Cup," he said.
The PCB panel charged with finding a new coach is due to submit a report to the board in the next few days and a final decision is expected in July.
Whatmore had been seen as a leading contender for the role of India coach.
But the Board of Control for Cricket in India ultimately interviewed South African Graham Ford and England's John Emburey. Neither man wanted the job, however.
