How named stand-in Kiwi skipper

Jamie How
How will fill in as captain until Vettori joins the touring party

Jamie How has been named New Zealand captain for their tour of England and Scotland until regular captain Daniel Vettori arrives from India.

Vettori is one of five men, including vice-captain Brendon McCullum, who will join the squad on 1 May after playing in the Indian Premier League.

Michael Mason, Mark Gillespie and Grant Elliott have been named as short-term replacements for the absent players.

Gillespie or Mason will stay with the Test squad after the absentees arrive.

Batsman Daniel Flynn, Aaron Redmond - son of former New Zealand player Rodney - and wicket-keeper Gareth Hopkins are the three uncapped players named in the Test squad.

Selection panel manager Sir Richard Hadlee said the squad signalled the future of New Zealand cricket.

Previously we had covered short-term wicket keeping with batsman in the squad who can keep, but we do not have that luxury with this squad

Sir Richard Hadlee

"Jamie will captain the team before Daniel Vettori arrives," he said.

"He has many years of captaincy experience and recently led a New Zealand XI against England.

"We welcome Aaron Redmond into the squad for the Test tour.

"He has been one of the State Championship's leading top-order batsmen for a number of seasons and has consistently made runs from the opening position, averaging over 40 this year.

"We hope he can provide a long-term solution to the top order, which we recognise as still being a key issue.

"The main Test squad will total 16 players to include a second wicket-keeping option in Gareth Hopkins.
