Veteran all-rounder Chris Cairns has been dropped from New Zealand's one-day squad for the tour of South Africa. But coach John Bracewell quickly dismissed suggestions it could be the end of the 35-year-old's career.
"Chris Cairns was not selected due to issues with his cricket fitness", said Bracewell in a statement.
Seam bowler James Franklin will replace Cairns and off-spinner Jeetan Patel keeps his place in the squad after touring Zimbabwe.
Bracewell said Cairns was still hoping to play in the 2007 World Cup.

He said: "I have met with Chris to discuss his non-selection and what is required for him to play his way back into the side.
"He is focused on playing in the World Cup and will have plenty of opportunity to return to form and full match fitness over the domestic season.
"He will be considered for a return to international cricket later in the summer."
Cairns, who has played in 208 one-day internationals, said he did not want to call a halt to his career just yet.
He said: "The pride's been dented, of course, but I've had time to come to terms with it.
"There's two ways, I can either fight it or say goodbye, and I'm not done yet."
Franklin was chosen to give an extra bowling option to the 15-man squad and Patel will provide a second spin option along with Daniel Vettori.
New Zealand play a Twenty20 match in Johannesburg on 21 October before five one-day internationals.
Squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Hamish Marshall, James Marshall, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Scott Styris, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Andre Adams, Shane Bond, Jeetan Patel.
