Tendulkar to miss tour one-dayers
Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar
Ganguly and Tendulkar will concentrate on Test cricket
Batting stars Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have been left out of India's squad for the forthcoming one-day series in Bangladesh.

They have been rested as the selectors look at other options following the team's failure at the World Cup.

Tendulkar and Ganguly have been named in a 14-man squad for the two Test matches which follow the one-dayers.

But there is no place for the out of form Virender Sehwag, spinner Harbhajan Singh or all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

Rajesh Pawar, an uncapped 27-year-old left-arm spinner from Baroda, replaces Harbhajan in the Test squad and there is also a new face in the one-day party with Bengal batting prospect Manoj Tewari given his first chance.

The selectors have also decided to give teenage leg-spinner Piyush Chawla a chance in the shorter form of the game.

For the tour, we thought we could get youngsters. It is only for this tour.

Chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar

He made a big impact at last year's Under-19 World Cup and subsequently played a Test match against England.

Chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar explained: "For the Bangladesh tour we thought we could get youngsters.

"It is only for this tour. We thought we could try players who have done well in first-class (domestic) cricket. This was the only opportunity we have to see and assess their talent.

"The team are playing 45 ODIs this year and it will be tough to play all the matches.

"We are given Sachin and Sourav a break and they understand that. Everybody will take rest."

However, Vengsarkar did confirm that Harbajan, Pathan and Ajit Agarkar had been dropped.

"Yes they have been dropped," he said. "There will be more one-dayers later and then they could be considered."

The tour marks the start of a new era for Indian cricket following Greg Chappell's decision to resign as coach.

Former all-rounder Ravi Shastri has taken charge on an interim basis and he will be assisted by Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh, who will have responsibility for bowling and fielding.
