Reader profiles - Rahul Dravid
By Varun Sharma

FACTFILE
Born: 11/1/1973
Right hand bat
Test debut: 20/6/96 v England, Lord's
ODI debut: 3/4/96 v Sri Lanka, Singapore

For almost a decade Rahul Dravid has been India's most consistent batsman. In a land where dash and flair are idolised, he has been India's rock.

He is unflappable and has a technique that could keep out a cruise missile.

He was recently handed the captaincy during a tumultuous period and has done reasonably well since then.

If he can bestow even half of his gritty and determined nature on a talented but self-destructive batting order, then he will have done his job.

FORM GUIDE

  • He loves English bowling - with 602 runs in the four-Test tour of England in 2002, Dravid averaged in excess of 100.

  • After 19 one-dayers in the 2005-06 season thus far he is averaging 45-plus - showing captaincy is suiting him fine.
