Reader profiles - Virender Sehwag

By Abid-ul-Zain

FACTFILE
V Sehwag
Born: 20/10/1978
Right hand bat, right-arm off-break
Test debut: 3/11/01 v South Africa, Bloemfontein
ODI debut: 1/4/99 v Pakistan, Mohali

Probably, on his day, the most destructive Test batsman at present.

However his lack of foot movement is often his downfall, and on a seaming wicket he can be exposed as shown recently against Pakistan in Karachi.

The series against England could depend on how Sehwag starts, because if he gets off to a flyer, he is capable of taking the game away from opponents.

A good battle to look out for will be Sehwag versus the swinging ball from England's Matthew Hoggard.

FORM GUIDE

  • In the recent Test series in Pakistan he scored 254 in one innings in Lahore and he averages a staggering 54.75 in Tests.

  • Averages a tick over 40 in Tests against England and 38.13 in one-dayers against England (against a career ODI average of 32.21).
