MacGill has taken 203 wickets for Australia in 42 Tests |
Australia leg spinner Stuart MacGill is to undergo hand surgery and is set to miss two of his side's upcoming four home Tests against India. MacGill, 35, picked up the problem in the second Test against Sri Lanka in November and is expected to be out for between four to six weeks.
"He will undergo surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome in the right hand," said Australia doctor Trefor James.
"It is a common problem that causes hand numbness."
Brad Hogg now has a chance to stake a claim for a permanent berth after missing out to MacGill for the recent series win over Sri Lanka.

"Although Stuart has had mild symptoms for several months it only began to affect his bowling during the second Test against Sri Lanka," added James.
"After consultation with me in Melbourne a decision has been taken to proceed with surgery as soon as possible."
The series against India starts on Boxing Day in Melbourne and then moves on to Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.
