Hayden prepares for a net session in St Vincent |
Opening batsman Matthew Hayden is in contention to play in Australia's first World Cup match with Scotland on Wednesday following his toe injury. The 35-year-old left-hander broke the big toe on his right foot in the final match of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in New Zealand on 20 February.
"He has done a lot of batting, and running," skipper Ricky Ponting said. "People have been worried about impact.
"He seems to be coming on well and is right on track for that first game."
Hayden, who has made seven one-day centuries and 29 fifties, suffered his injury while making 181 in a losing cause against the Kiwis.
The Australia selectors have to decide whether to break up their opening partnership, with Adam Gilchrist and Shane Watson having rattled up 140 inside 24 overs against England on Friday.
Hayden batted for over an hour in the nets on Saturday and Ponting described the batting order dilemma as "a good situation" for the selectors.
