From grass track to dust bowl

India's spinners are likely to have everything in their favour in Mumbai

If the pitch in Nagpur came as a surprise, the one here in Mumbai has proved totally predictable.

In fact, it looks like such a typically Indian surface it won't surprise anyone if the ball turns square from the first ball.

So much was made here in India about the healthy covering of grass in Nagpur, but the dust bowl here is exactly what the Indian spinners, and to a lesser degree batsmen, would have been praying for since we arrived.

Traditionally, touring teams expect these type of pitches when they visit India.

There is no doubt it makes for intense and difficult conditions for the opposition batsmen, who simply aren't used to combating this style of wicket; especially when India have world class spin bowlers at their disposal.

After we won the first Test in Bangalore, coach John Buchanan sent out a note to every member of the squad reminding us that we should be ready and expecting new challenges to arise before the tour was completed.

He talked about the extra on and off field distractions, the result of the tossed coin, the varying climactic conditions and the probability of performing on more difficult pitches than we had in Bangalore.

We know how important it is to retain our high standards

He was basically reminding us of the need to stay focussed, if we were to win the series and we have been able to leap over varying hurdles in order to realise our ambition.

We have taken on every challenge with open arms and thus far come up triumphant in dealing with any adverse situations that may have come our way.

The likelihood of a dream track for India is just one more of the challenges we have been expecting and we are now looking forward to building on the enormous confidence that we have gained over the last six weeks.

In many ways it is going to be hard to reach the same emotional summit of last week, but we are keen to finish off the series like we started it with a victory.

A busy summer of cricket will greet us only a week after we arrive back into Australia, and we understand the bigger picture going into this final Test.

It is an important part of the way we play our cricket that we keep applying the same successful habits and principles over and over and over.

Nathan Hauritz
Nathan Hauritz is in contention for his first cap

Regardless of the enormous joy and satisfaction gained last week we know how important it is to retain our high standards and continue to keep the pressure on India.

The dry dusty surface has encouraged the selectors to add Nathan Hauritz to the squad.

He has worked very hard on this tour honing his off spinning skills and he is sure to come into serious contention for a Test debut.

Much has been made of the so called 'ageing' Australian cricket team and amongst everything else that has been achieved on this tour, the blooding of two newcomers in Michael Clarke and potentially Nathan Hauritz would add an extra ingredient to the outstanding success of this tour.

After a wonderful celebration it is now time to switch back into Test cricket mode and if the humidity, heat and pitch in Mumbai is anything to go by then it won't take long to realise the fight is about to start again.

From Mumbai,
JL
