Collingwood remains captain of England's Twenty20 side

England all-rounder Paul Collingwood will undergo arthroscopic left-knee surgery to correct cartilage damage at the end of the World Cup.

The 34-year-old has been suffering for much of the winter and was left out of England's side for the group-stage wins against South Africa and West Indies.

He remains available for selection for Saturday's quarter-final against Sri Lanka at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium.

He is due to play for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

But with that tournament starting on 8 April he seems certain to miss a large chunk of it. Collingwood has retired from Tests but continues in limited-overs cricket.

He ended his Test career after making 83 runs in six innings during England's successful Ashes campaign and has managed only 61 runs in four innings at the World Cup.

The Durham player featured in his side's draw with India and shock defeat by Ireland but was dropped for the victory over South Africa and, after returning for the Bangladesh win, was again left out for the make-or-break win against West Indies.

England's chief medical officer Nick Peirce said: "Paul felt some discomfort in his left knee during the group stages of the World Cup, and a precautionary scan ahead of England's match against South Africa showed no significant damage.

"However, further assessment suggests a loose piece of cartilage floating in his knee that will require surgical removal.

"We'll be able to establish a definitive rehabilitation timescale following surgery - but we expect Paul to make a full recovery in due course."
