The England and Wales Cricket Board has been granted permission to call up Chris Tremlett to their World Cup squad to replace injured seamer Stuart Broad.

Broad was ruled out of the tournament on Tuesday after straining his side in England's win over South Africa.

Tremlett was already with the squad as a stand-by player and the 6ft 7in Surrey paceman would be a like-for-like replacement for Notts player Broad.

However, 29-year-old Tremlett has played only 13 one-day internationals.

Broad, five years Tremlett's junior, has an impressive tally of 130 wickets from 76 ODIs, including a best haul of 5-23 against South Africa at Trent Bridge in 2008.

He was also the match-winner against the Proteas on Sunday, taking 4-15 including the last two wickets in what proved to be the final over of the match - and had also been England's best bowler in the warm-ups.

England have never won the World Cup, and their task of doing so this time is being made harder by injuries to some of their best players in the 50-over game.

Eoin Morgan, who broke a finger during the Australia tour, has just returned to the squad to replace another prominent batsman, Kevin Pietersen, who was ruled out with a hernia injury.

Tremlett was part of England's successful Ashes side in Australia during the winter, returning to the Test arena three years after his last appearance.

However Ajmal Shahzad is expected to play ahead of him in Friday's match against Bangladesh, where a win would should be enough to ensure England's progress to the quarter-finals.
