Bresnan has been a key member of England's attack since the third Test

England seam bowler Tim Bresnan will miss the rest of the one-day series in Australia because of injury.

The 25-year-old Yorkshireman suffered a torn calf muscle during the second game in Hobart on Friday.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement said Bresnan would return home for treatment but was expected to be fit for next month's World Cup.

England suffered a further blow ahead of Sunday's third one-dayer when Kevin Pietersen (groin) was ruled out.

The team's plans for the World Cup, which will take place in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, have been disrupted by a series of injury problems, both during and since the end of the Ashes series.

Stuart Broad has only recently returned to Australia after going home following the second Test in Adelaide last month with a stomach muscle injury.

Spinner Graeme Swann, meanwhile, has been sidelined by a bruised knee, an injury he picked up during the first of two Twenty20 matches which preceded the current one-day series.

The loss of Bresnan, who took 11 wickets in two Tests, to help England retain the Ashes with a 3-1 victory is another significant setback with England's first World Cup match against the Netherlands in Nagpur less than a month away.

Middlesex's Steve Finn will remain with the squad in Australia to provide pace bowling cover.
