Stuart Broad vows to curb temper for Ashes

England all-rounder Stuart Broad has vowed to keep his temper in check during the Ashes series in Australia.

Broad was fined 50% of his match fee for throwing the ball at Pakistan batsman Zulqarnain Haider in August.

"I know the lines that are there and not to cross them," Broad, 24, told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek.

"I did cross that once this summer and got punished for it but I've learnt from my mistakes and hopefully this winter all will go to plan."

Broad has become increasingly associated with acts of petulance since breaking into the England team in 2006 and was warned by coach Andy Flower in March that he was getting " a bit close to the line" in his dealings with umpires.

With Andrew Strauss's men struggling for wickets at Edgbaston in August, he threw the ball at Haider, striking the Pakistan wicketkeeper on the shoulder.

Match referee Ranjan Madugalle described the Nottinghamshire paceman's actions as "unacceptable".

"I understand the frustrations of a bowler in the heat of the moment but as an international sportsman one needs to control these emotions whatever may be the situation and always respect the opponent," he said at the time.

Speaking on Sportsweek, Broad said keeping control of his emotions would be doubly important in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of an Ashes series.

"I'm a passionate player when I pull that England shirt on, it's a very special and proud moment for you," he said.

"There's a fine line to it. I don't want to lose any of that passion for the game, as a bowler I need to have that real desire to get the batsman out and be in their face and be aggressive.

"You have got to try to make the batsman feel a bit uncomfortable to get him out.

"It's just important to try to keep a cool head and stay logical rather than emotional. But then again you have to keep that balance between not becoming too logical because you need to have that passion in order to play to 100% in the game."

Broad, who has 97 Test wickets and scored his first century at Lord's in August, will be a key member of the England side which is aiming to win the Ashes on Australian soil for the first time since 1987, with the five-Test series starting in Brisbane on 25 November.

Broad said the key to success would be getting first innings runs on the board and has backed Kevin Pietersen to rediscover his top form for the series.

Pietersen has not scored a Test century since March 2009 and was dropped for the one-day series against Pakistan earlier this year.

"The Ashes is set up perfectly for him to fire back into form," said Broad.

"He's a big-game player and I have no doubt that he'll step up and perform for us in Australia."
