Salman Butt tips Pakistan to fight back against England

Pakistan captain Salman Butt tipped his team to reproduce their recent comeback win over Australia in the second Test against England at Edgbaston on Friday.

Pakistan went 1-0 down against England in the four-match series after slumping to a 435-run defeat at Trent Bridge.

However, Butt is taking heart from the display against Australia, when they fought back from 1-0 down to draw 1-1.

He said: "I think the first game against Australia was like this and we must remember the second game we won."

Australia beat Pakistan by 150 runs at Lord's in July only for Butt's men to rebound with a three-wicket victory at Headingley after bowling out the Aussies for 88 on the first day.

"That will make us stronger in the next game," added Butt. " We can come back for sure."

Pakistan's performance against England bore more resemblance to the Lord's display with some impressive swing bowling undermined by poor fielding and a brittle batting line-up.

England made scores of 354 and 262-9, bowling the tourists out for 182 in their first innings.

The game was wrapped up in less than two hours on Sunday morning as Pakistan were bowled out for 80, their lowest Test score against England.

"It's not a good performance, it's not something the guys were looking for, although it's good it [the defeat] has come early in the series and we have a good chance to work on our mistakes and make a good comeback," reflected Butt.

"They're a young side with limited experience but they have the talent and have shown they can do it.

"We have everything to work on but I truly believe in my team. These things happen. I think we definitely have to regroup, come up with a new strategy and make us stronger."

Butt was keen to deflect criticism away from wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who dropped two catches, missed a stumping and was out for nought in both innings.

"I'm sure Kamran will come back strongly, he has had his ups and downs but he will be back and show his character in batting and keeping," the Pakistan skipper said.
