Pakistan begin the day on 147-9, needing eight to avoid the follow-on - but surprise batting hero Umar Gul needs little time to take his side past that, notching his first half-century in any form of cricket in the process
Indeed, England cannot get the better of Gul who is 65 not out when his 10th wicket partner Mohammad Asif is run out with Pakistan's innings finishing at 182 - 172 runs behind England
England's second innings gets off to an awful start with captain Andrew Strauss out for 0 in the first over, courtesy of a diving catch from wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal (following some interesting ball juggling in the slips)
Pakistan - and Mohammad Asif in particular - are soon celebrating again as Alistair Cook is dismissed for a mere 12 runs, becoming the 100th Test match victim of the Pakistan paceman in the process
It is a reasonable morning overall for Pakistan - but they are paying the price for some awful batting on Friday - and Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott extend the home side's lead to 221 at lunch
The lunch break seems to benefit the tourists more than the home side - Kevin Pietersen falls to a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and the England number four's scratchy Test form continues
And Jonathan Trott soon follows his compatriot back into the pavilion as a beauty from Umar Gul keeps low, bamboozles the batsman and makes a horrible mess of his stumps
Saturday was turning into a personal triumph for Umar Gul, who trapped Paul Collingwood lbw for one to pick up his third wicket during an impressive spell
England's batsmen were not exactly making it easy on themselves, with Eoin Morgan contriving to run himself out after a bad mix-up with Matt Prior, much to Umar Akmal's delight
England reach 120-6 at tea - hardly vintage batting but it gives the home side a healthy lead of 292 and with more than two days still to go, Andrew Strauss's men are firm favourites to win and go 1-0 up in the series
England's Graeme Swann looked in good touch during his innings - but a sharp bouncer from Umar Gul catches the spinner unawares and he is thankful that his helmet takes the force of the blow
The incident appears to unsettle Swann, who is out lbw to Danish Kaneria (following a review) shortly afterwards - but England's lead is moving towards the 350 mark and Pakistan know their hopes of victory are diminishing
With England's position looking more secure, the home side's batsman begin to relax and Matt Prior inflicts real damage with some expansive shots which take him to a well-earned 15th Test half-century
Prior is looking in fine touch and despite the loss of Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson at the other end, England's wicketkeeper is chasing a century and pushing England's lead to beyond 400 in the process
Matt Prior forges a good partnership with Steven Finn and with some judicious use of the strike the wicketkeeper reaches his third Test century - England then declare on 262-9 setting Pakistan an improbable 435 to win
Pakistan's second innings begins as badly as England's had earlier in the day with captain Salman Butt caught by Paul Collingwood off Stuart Broad with just 10 runs on the board
Within two balls Broad is celebrating again as he traps Azhar Ali lbw - the Pakistan team go for a referral but technology confirms the decision and the tourists are suddenly 10-2
And the late delight keeps on coming for England as James Anderson gets in on the act, swinging one in to the left hander and trapping him lbw for one - Pakistan are 11-3 and needing either a miracle or heavy rain
A good crowd at Trent Bridge applaud the team off at the close after a day in which England have really pressed home their advantage and seem certain to go 1-0 up in the series on Sunday
