Kevin Pietersen says England can still win second Test
Pietersen made 45 impressive runs on a hot day before falling to a loose shot
Kevin Pietersen insisted England could still win the second Test against Bangladesh despite their struggles on day two at Mirpur.
He described the day as "interesting, not entertaining" after England closed 248 behind, with opener Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 64.
"It is a war of attrition and you just want to fight which Trotty's done," Pietersen commented.
"We've got to bat all day on Monday but we can still win this Test."
After the Bangladesh tail frustrated the bowlers to rack up their third highest Test total of 419, England's hopes of a 2-0 series victory hang in the balance.
Following Alastair Cook's dismissal for 21, Pietersen came in to join Trott and made 45 before spooning a catch into the hands of Imrul Kayes off Shakib Al Hasan.
The 29-year-old had the consolation, however, of passing 5,000 Test runs in a record time of four years and 273 days.
"It's something to be proud of," Pietersen added. "If you look back 10 years ago and somebody told me I'd get 5,000 Test runs I'd have done anything for that.
"But I've probably chucked away a lot of runs, I probably chucked away a hundred today - I was very cross with myself. I was particularly frustrated getting out on 45, getting another start and not going on."
Pietersen defended skipper Cook after Bangladesh's tail managed to add 89 to their total during the morning session, many of the runs coming through a vacant third man region.
"We really tried to dry them up and it's not as if they were playing them down there - they were nicks," he said.
"Chef's young in his captaincy and it was a day for him to learn, and for us all to learn."
Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons was delighted to see his side battling back after their heavy defeat in the opening Test and said: "We're going okay, it's probably evenly poised at the moment.
"Hopefully we'll be bowling last on that wicket and hopefully it starts to turn - it's still not turning much though.
"We're playing good cricket and hopefully we can have day three and have a 'win' on that day too."
