South Africa add just seven runs to their overnight 29-0 when Graeme Smith appears to have edged a Ryan Sidebottom delivery to Matt Prior, but the skipper refuses to walk and the decision goes to the third umpire
But Daryl Harper does not believe Smith hit it and the skipper is reprieved, although the umpire does not have access to a Sky TV feed which suggests the opener did make contact
Next over though and England do strike. Graeme Swann pockets the catch after Ashwell Prince edges Stuart Broad into his hands at second slip - South Africa 36-1, 144 behind the tourists
James Anderson, coming on as first change, has little luck as Smith and Hashim Amla frustrate England's bowlers on an overcast morning in Johannesburg
Smith starts to dominate the bowlers and powers past fifty to become the leading run-scorer in the series and he reaches lunch on 84 not out, with his side on 160-1, just 20 behind England
Amla, having battled through a testing spell as England found swing and seam, also passes fifty in an unbroken stand of 124 as the hosts set themselves up for a significant first-innings lead
Smith completes his 20th Test century, his sixth against England and second in a row off 182 balls, including 16 fours, as South Africa cruise into the lead soon after lunch
Sidebottom, who thought he had Smith out for 15, finally removes South Africa's skipper for 105 but the hosts are in control with the score on 201-2
A spectacular thunderstorm falls halfway through the second session and play is halted, perhaps for the whole day, with South Africa on 207-2
Although it seemed improbable a few hours before, hard work by the ground staff and the re-emergence of the sun rescues the situation and another 23 balls are able to be be bowled
But England can not forge any breakthrough after the break as Jacques Kallis gets his eye in before the umpires call a halt to proceeding because of bad light
