Seamer Mark Davies called into England Test squad

Davies helped Durham retain the Division One title last season

Durham seamer Mark Davies has been added to the England Test squad in South Africa as cover for seam bowlers James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom.

The 29-year-old took 19 wickets at an average of 29 in the 2009 Championship.

Anderson, who took eight wickets in three games in the one-day series, has stayed behind in Durban to have another injection on his right knee.

He is sore from a mystery injury that has not been diagnosed despite scans, while Sidebottom has a side problem.

Davies, who is in South Africa with the England Performance Programme, took six wickets in last week's victory over Gauteng, including first-innings figures of 4-56.

He might even have taken five in the innings but his boots went missing having been left on the outfield overnight, causing a delay in his return to the field.

Durham now have four players in the squad, with all-rounder Paul Collingwood and bowlers Graham Onions and Liam Plunkett.
