England know Gibbs can be a destroyer of bowling attacks |
South Africa have added batsman Herschelle Gibbs to their squad as they look to turn the tables on England in their one-day series. England went 1-0 up on Sunday and the Proteas cannot afford any further defeats if they want to win the series. The experienced Gibbs, 35, has hit 21 centuries in one-day internationals, two of them against England. South Africa also hope they can get young fast bowler Wayne Parnell fit for the Cape Town match on Friday. Parnell has been battling an ankle injury, but has been in fine form this year and would add a cutting edge to a bowling attack which was helpless to prevent Paul Collingwood and Jonathan Trott chase down a target of 251 with some ease. Collingwood (105 not out) and Trott (87) put on 162 as England got home with four overs to spare. | 606: DEBATE |
As well as Parnell, South Africa have been shaken by the absence from the entire series of all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who has a fractured rib. The lack of Kallis has affected the balance of South Africa's side, with Ryan McLaren, who bats as low as 10 for Kent, featuring at six on Sunday. England do not have a clean bill of health either, and are hoping to strengthen their side by getting Stuart Broad (shoulder) and Graeme Swann (side strain) back for Friday's match. Sajid Mahmood and Adil Rashid are the players whose places could be under threat from them.
