After Saturday's play was interrupted twice and then curtailed by rain and bad light, England are able to start day four on time, with West Indies resuming on 94-3 - still 475 behind England
Ramnaresh Sarwan, 41 not out overnight, soon reaches his 32nd Test half century as he and fellow Guyanese batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul dig in
However, Sarwan - who was hit on the earflap of his helmet on Saturday - then doubles up with pain after he is hit in the midriff by James Anderson
Shivnarine Chanderpaul survives a loud appeal for a catch at the wicket when he is "caught" by Paul Collingwood at slip - but umpire Steve Davis correctly rules that the ball came off Chanderpaul's boot
But the very next over, Stuart Broad induces an outside edge from Chanderpaul, and wicketkeeper Matt Prior takes the catch behind the stumps - West Indies are 167-4
Brendan Nash joins former skipper Sarwan, who keeps the scoreboard ticking over and brutally pulls Broad through square leg to reach his 15th Test hundred
But having made exactly 100, Sarwan gets a vicious short delivery from Broad which he can only glove to Tim Bresnan at gully - Broad takes the congratulations after removing the Windies' two key men
Australia-raised left-hander Nash is on the defensive against Graeme Swann's off-spin, in the shadow of Lumley Castle, as West Indies reach lunch on 188-5
Nash departs in bizarre fashion when he misses a ball from James Anderson and desperately tries to swat it away from the stumps, only for the ball to brush off stump
England's Kevin Pietersen has a couple of spells off the field with a stomach problem, but returns to field with his usual enthusiasm as England look to press home their advantage
Jerome Taylor, who made a Test century against New Zealand last December, makes just 10 before he is trapped lbw by the bearded Graham Onions - who celebrates a wicket on his home ground
The tall Sulieman Benn rides his luck early on, but the left-arm spinner makes his mark with some powerfully-struck boundaries, supporting Denesh Ramdin well
Wicketkeeper Matt Prior needs treatment from England physio Kirk Russell after taking a blow on the finger - he leaves the ground at tea to go for an X-ray
But Benn also falls to a strange dismissal as he lofts the ball towards Kevin Pietersen at deep mid-on, and although the ball does not carry to Pietersen, Benn dawdles in mid-pitch and is run out by a direct hit
James Anderson and Fidel Edwards lock horns again, after Edwards bowled a hostile spell to Anderson during England's first innings
Meanwhile, Prior's opposite number, West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin brings up his seventh half century in Tests after showing defiance against some hostile bowling from Anderson and Broad
Edwards is then hit on the helmet by Stuart Broad as he attempts to duck into a delivery which does not rise as high as he expected - the Windies are 303-8 at tea, still 266 runs behind
With Matt Prior sent for an X-ray on his injured finger, Paul Collingwood - seen as England's best fielder - takes the wicketkeeping gauntlets after tea
England wrap up the innings soon after tea, taking the last two wickets at a cost of just seven more runs - West Indies are bowled out for 310 and are asked to follow on, while Anderson finishes with 5-87
As West Indies' openers go out to bat for the second time, captain Chris Gayle survives an early lbw appeal against Anderson and soon smashes him for a straight six
The opening pair add 53, but Devon Smith's weakness against Swann's off-spin is exposed again, as Smith is dismissed by his nemesis for the fifth time in Tests
Knowing his side need to score 260 to make England bat again, Gayle is joined by Ramnaresh Sarwan and reaches his 50 from just 39 balls, after smashing another straight six
But Graham Onions strikes twice within three balls, trapping Sarwan lbw for 22 and inducing Gayle to edge to slip for 54 - West Indies are 115-3, still 144 behind, when bad light curtails play
