West Indies' last series win came against Bangladesh in 2004
West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he was nervous watching his team gain the draw with England they needed to end a five-year wait for a Test series win.
Gayle, who had to bat despite being injured, saw his team battle all the way before reaching the close on 114-8.
"I didn't have the mindset to bat, I thought the guys would get it over with and bat out the day but it didn't happen," he told BBC Sport.
"We didn't last as long as I wanted but the guys really put their hands up."
The series win was the West Indies' first against any team since they beat Bangladesh at home in 2004, and their first over England since 2000.
"I'm glad it's over with," he said afterwards.
"It was a batter's series - we came out on top and it's been quite a while since we won a series so we're really happy to come out on top.
"The wickets have been a bit flat which is general around the world now, so the bowlers have to really work hard and you need spinners in the team to pick up wickets.
"They were flatter than I expected - I thought we might have a few fliers but it didn't happen."
