England Lions squared their mini series against South Africa with a six-wicket victory in the second match at Derby.

The Lions chose to bowl and Hampshire's Dimitri Mascarenhas claimed key batsmen Graeme Smith (50) and Jacques Kallis.

It needed 63 not out in 67 balls from Mark Boucher, with five fours and two sixes, to take the tourists to 209-5.

Samit Patel guided the Lions home with 52 balls left, firing seven fours and a six in 60 not out, sharing an unbroken 113 with Eoin Morgan, who made 47.

In a much-changed line-up, the Lions were skippered by Ed Joyce.

Smith shared a rapid 67 for the first wicket with Herschelle Gibbs, finally broken by Darren Pattinson, who made a surprise Test debut at Headingley earlier this summer.

Pattinson, however, was the most expensive of the bowlers, and conceded 62 runs from only seven overs.

The Lions got themselves back on track after losing the early wicket of Jonathan Trott.

Matt Prior and Owais Shah made useful contributions in a second-wicket stand of 71.

Andre Nel made two quick breakthroughs by bowling Shah for 46, which included three sixes, and Joyce trod on his stumps for 10.

But Patel, who succumbed to a golden duck in the first match, helped his side over the finishing line with almost nine overs remaining.
