Bopara has played in 26 one-day internationals for England |
England have drafted in Essex batsman Ravi Bopara to replace former captain Michael Vaughan for the fourth Test against South Africa at The Oval. Vaughan resigned the captaincy on Sunday and ruled himself out of selection for Thursday's Test match. Stuart Broad and Steve Harmison keep their places in the 13-man squad for Kevin Pietersen's debut as captain. England also named their squad for the Twenty20 and one-day games, with Samit Patel the only uncapped player. Bopara, 23, has played three Tests before and is a regular in England's one-day international outfit. | 606: DEBATE | He has been in fine form for Essex this season, averaging 63 with the bat in the County Championship and taking 20 wickets at 25.5. He made his England Test debut in Sri Lanka in December 2007 and scored 8, 34, 0, 0 and 0 as Vaughan's men slipped to a series defeat. "England are not strong enough to play five bowlers, so they need batsmen who can bowl and Ravi fits the bill," said former England captain and Essex batting coach Graham Gooch. "He is a top class batsman and we might see him consolidate a position in the England team at number three, four or five for many years to come." England play South Africa in a Twenty20 match on Wednesday 20 August and then begin a five-match one-day series against Graeme Smith's side two days later. All-rounder Patel earns his first call-up to the squad, which will also be captained by Pietersen as he begins his reign as skipper in both forms of the game. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior is back in favour at the expense of the out-of-form Tim Ambrose, though the Warwickshire stumper keeps his place in the Test team. Dimitri Mascarenhas was also left out because of the return of Andrew Flintoff.
