Vaughan's team are 1-0 down in their four-match Test series

England chief selector Geoff Miller has held clear-the-air talks with captain Michael Vaughan after the second Test defeat by South Africa at Headingley.

Vaughan said on Monday the shock selection of uncapped seamer Darren Pattinson "looked confused".

Miller explained before a meeting on Tuesday: "The selectors are not here to make Michael's job harder, which is why I'd like him to clarify his comments.

"It's been made into a massive issue by the media and I want to hear his side."

Miller added: "This is professional sport. I'm the national selector, Michael is the captain - we're both in this together. We must make sure we're on an even keel."

The inclusion of Pattinson - a 29-year-old with only 11 first-class appearances to his name prior to his Test debut - has caused widespread debate after England's 10-wicket hammering at Headingley.

Pattinson came in for the injured Ryan Sidebottom - ahead of Chris Tremlett, who has been England's 12th man for much of the summer.

The Australian-raised Pattinson was also deemed more suitable than Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison and Simon Jones, who have all been in fine form for their counties recently.

England legend Ian Botham said he thought it was "the most illogical, pathetic and diabolical piece of selecting I've seen.

Pattinson is the first player to be handed an England debut since the current selection panel of Miller, James Whitaker and Ashley Giles took over.

Former captain Geoff Boycott added: "This was one of the first big decisions taken by England's new selection panel, and they got it badly wrong.

"They need to admit their mistake and realise that wild hunches are no way to build an international cricket team."

England's selectors name the squad for the third Test against South Africa, which starts on 30 July at Edgbaston, on Saturday.
