The International Cricket Council has changed the rules regarding the length of intervals for the rest of England's one-day series against New Zealand.

Rain forced Wednesday's game at Edgbaston to be abandoned as a no-result with just one more over required to complete the match.

But there was controversy over the half-hour break taken between innings.

Umpires will now have the option of reducing it to a minimum of 10 minutes to try and ensure a result.

ICC regulation 15.1 now reads: "The duration of the interval shall be agreed mutually by the umpires and both captains subject to no interval being of more than 30 minutes' duration or less than 10 minutes' duration.

The ICC was asked to take action after a meeting between David Collier, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and his New Zealand counterpart Justin Vaughan.

But the matter will be discussed further by the ICC chief executives' committee in Dubai at the end of the month before the amendment is brought into force for all one-day matches.

New Zealand, meanwhile, also blamed England's poor over-rate for denying them a possible victory at Edgbaston in the second of the five-ODI series.

The Kiwis only needed to score seven from the next over to reach the target set using the Duckworth-Lewis calculations, providing they did not lose another wicket.

"We were bowling within the time frame required and that is quite hard in one-day cricket. For me we did it right, unfortunately we can't control the fact that we came off for rain.

"There's an assumption here that New Zealand were definitely going to get those runs and not lose another wicket.

"I think they were just on top but we were still very much in the game and if we had got another wicket it would have been difficult for them to win."

The series resumes at Bristol on Saturday and England pace bowler Ryan Sidebottom could again be absent because of a back problem.

"It is related to the spasm he had at Old Trafford, that settled down to a degree but left some inflammation that we want to get rid off, we don't want it rumbling on," said Moores.
