Hugh Morris, the head of the England cricket team, has given his full backing to head coach Peter Moores.

Moores has come under pressure after a mixed start, but the England and Wales Cricket Board's managing director said he would take a long-term view.

"He has the potential to be an outstanding coach," said Morris.

"Peter and his team are doing an excellent job. I've seen how hard they work and I've no doubt the results will head in the right direction."

The former Sussex coach took over from Duncan Fletcher nine months ago and enjoyed immediate success with victory over West Indies before guiding England to one-day series wins over India and Sri Lanka.

But England lost successive Test series at home to India and Sri Lanka and were comprehensively beaten by New Zealand in the one-day series at the start of the current tour.

"He had a terrific record with Sussex, was very impressive at the Academy and the players have been hugely impressed with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game," said Morris, who took up the new role last October.

"I've enjoyed working with him and he has been in this job about nine months, has a young management team with him as well and I think it is just a question of everyone bedding down.

"In international sport you always want to win but there have been a heck of a lot of changes in the last few months.

"In times of change you sometimes have to take one step back to take two forward and I think we are in that period of change."

England suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test against New Zealand in Hamilton but bounced back to level the series in Wellington and end a run of seven Tests without a win.

Ahead of the decisive third Test at McLean Park, Morris said he had been impressed by the character in the England side.

"To win in Wellington was fundamentally important to the team and they significantly improved on Hamilton and will be looking to do so again," he added.

"It's always a measure of a team the way they bounce back after adversity and clearly the performance in Hamilton was not what we wanted, it was a very disappointing performance.

"Wellington showed the spirit in the team, there's a lot of talent in the team too and when a lot of talented players work as hard as they are doing I think it is a matter of time before they turn in the right results."
