Spinner Graeme Swann believes England's one-day series defeat to New Zealand should be put in the context of them building towards the next World Cup. England went down 3-1 in the five-match series against the Black Caps, but off-spinner Swann told BBC Sport: "We are a young side and still learning.
"We're looking at each series as a building block and a learning process between now and the 2011 World Cup.
"That's the bigger picture. We're going forward and looking to peak in 2011."
England have failed to impress at the tournament since finishing as runners-up in 1992, losing in the quarter-finals in 1996 before two first-round exits preceded their going out at the Super Eight stage in 2007.
But Swann says the team are focused on triumphing in three years, explaining: "It's something we're working towards and we've earmarked it as a tournament we want to win.
"We can't expect to win every match we play at the moment - but that's where we want to be come the next World Cup.

"We want to the best team in the world, simple as that."
The 2011 World Cup will be staged in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
And Swann insists England are already showing signs of becoming a great side, their series defeat in New Zealand coming after impressive victories over India at home and in Sri Lanka.
"When everything clicks for us - batting, bowling and fielding - we're a force to be reckoned with already," he said.
"The challenge every game is to get all three clicking at the same time and hopefully that consistency will come. When it does, we are going to be a very, very strong side."
