Morris was general secretary of the Transport & General Workers' Union |
Lord Bill Morris has dropped out of the running to become the new chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board. The former union leader had announced his interest in becoming a candidate to replace the departing David Morgan.
But the strong support shown for Mike Soper and Giles Clarke, the candidates in the original tied vote, prompted Morris to decide against standing.
The closing date for the new ballot will be 24 September and the new chairman will serve until March 2009.
An ECB statement read: "Lord Morris of Handsworth has decided not to accept nomination for the chairmanship."
Morris joined the running to replace Morgan, who is leaving the post to become the International Cricket Council's next president, after Soper and Clarke polled nine votes each in the original vote, forcing a second round.
But after writing to all 18 first-class counties and the MCC to drum up support for his nomination, Morris, who has been an independent member of the board for several years, changed his mind.
