James Anderson celebrates a wicket at Lord's on Saturday
Anderson claimed his best Test figures of 5-44 on Saturday
James Anderson enjoyed the rewards of his hard labour as he claimed Test-best figures to help England into a strong position in the first Test at Lord's.

Anderson took 5-42 as India were all out for 201, before the hosts extended their lead to 174 by the close.

"I'm really happy with way I bowled all through the innings, definitely my best bowling for England," he said.

"I've done a lot of work on my action and just needed a lot of overs under my belt - I've got that this summer."

An injury to Matthew Hoggard paved the way for the Lancashire paceman to return to the Test team.

He combined beautifully with Ryan Sidebottom and debutant Chris Tremlett and the trio never let India off the hook at Lord's on Saturday.

In the first innings we got eight wickets for 40-odd runs and we need to do something like that

India opener Wasim Jaffer

"We've got a plan to all their batters and it paid off," said Anderson.

"I think all the way through the innings we bowled really well. Chris and Ryan also bowled well and on another day one of them could have got a five-for.

"We've now got to concentrate on getting runs, and then hopefully bowl them out over the last two days.

"We had worked really hard yesterday to get them four down and if we had let that slip it would have been pointless, so it was a really important session this morning."

With England well set at 77-2 in their second innings the hosts are in a position of strength, but India opener Wasim Jaffer said the tourists believe they are not yet out of the game.

"In the first innings we got eight wickets for 40-odd runs and we need to do something like that, rather than conceding runs and getting ourselves on the back foot," he said.

"In the first hour on the first day we gave away too many runs but came back well and we need to do that again in the second innings."

Jaffer, who top scored for India with 58, paid tribute to the England swing bowlers.

"England bowled pretty well, with a good length and in the right areas," he said.

"Probably we could have batted a bit more positively, but we would only have got about 30 or 40 more runs."
