Collingwood savours home century
Paul Collingwood
Collingwood's highest Test score is 206 against Australia last winter
Paul Collingwood said a century on his home ground was a momentous occasion.

"It was a very special day," said the all-rounder. "I had the family here and lots of Durham members. It's an over- used term but it's a dream come true."

The West Indies begin the final day at 83-3, 30 behind, but Shiv Chanderpaul, who has scored two unbeaten centuries in his last two innings, is on 16.

"He's a class player but hopefully this wicket has got enough in it to get a nick or get him lbw," Collingwood said.

Collingwood, who later emerged as a candidate to take over the captaincy of the one-day team following Michael Vaughan's decision to step down as skipper, scored a double century in the Adelaide Test in last winter's Ashes, and now has five centuries from his last 19 matches.

"There has been a lot of hard work and effort that has been put into my game," the 31-year-old said.

"I've still got some technical flaws but hopefully mentally I'm getting myself there and I just want to continue scoring runs to help England become a better side. If I can do that as a team member I'm happy."

I bowled too many four balls and was disappointed to go for a hundred

Fidel Edwards

He shared an enterprising stand of 169 in 38 overs for the seventh wicket with Matt Prior, who impressed again with two sixes in his 62, his second fifty in only his fourth Test.

"It was a great partnership," Collingwood said.

"We decided if the ball was in the area to hit we were going to go at it 100% and hopefully it would go hard enough or fast enough over the slips if we didn't quite get it."

Fidel Edwards, not selected for the first two Tests, took 5-112 in England's 400.

He said: "I was pretty pleased with getting five wickets but not with the way I've bowled in this game.

"I bowled too many four balls and was disappointed to go for a hundred.

"I was hoping to make the first Test match but the selectors went with the other guys, who have been bowling all right for the past couple of months, so you couldn't blame anyone for that."
