England will hope to polish off West Indies on Monday after rain prevented any play on day three at Headingley.
The drizzle started 45 minutes before the scheduled start but relented in the afternoon and the umpires decided the second Test could resume at 1330 BST.
However, another downpour put paid to that and the day was abandoned at 1700.
When the action recommences the Windies, on 22-2 in their second innings, need a daunting 402 more runs just to make England bat again.
Weather permitting, the hosts are overwhelming favourites to go 1-0 up with two Tests to go.
They probably need only seven more wickets with visiting skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan only available to bat "if absolutely necessary" according to the Windies camp.
He landed heavily while fielding on day one, injuring one of the joints in his shoulder, and did not bat in the first innings.
England coach Peter Moores said after play was called off on Sunday: "You never count your chickens but we're in a really good position and all credit to the lads for putting us there.
"Hopefully the weather's good on Monday and we can get out there and play."
