Jamaican pace bowler Daren Powell admitted he and the other West Indies seamers had let the team down on the first morning of the Lord's Test. England were 85-0 at lunch on a green wicket with overcast conditions overhead, ultimately closing on 200-3.
Powell said: "We didn't get the lines and lengths right in the morning.
"After lunch we bowled better and got some results. I was happy to get two wickets but would have been more happy if I had got Kevin Pietersen out."
Powell said West Indies' limited preparation - they allowed themselves just one warm-up match and bad weather in Taunton prevented them from bowling - was not a valid excuse.
"I don't want to blame it on that," he said. "We are professionals and you want to go out there and perform."
Nor did the Lord's slope worry him, he added.
"I don't look at things like. You just have to go out there and put the ball in the right areas because if you think about the slope and don't bowl in the right areas you'll get whacked around.
"After lunch we bowled on one side of the wicket and let the ball do its work. You have to relax, and let the ball skid off the wicket.
"In the Caribbean you have to hit the wicket pretty hard to get bounce and movment. I prefer bowling in English conditions with no sun."
