Gough ready for World Cup call-up
Darren Gough

Veteran paceman Darren Gough says he remains hopeful of being named in England's squad for the World Cup.

The 36-year-old was overlooked for the provisional 30-man squad but selectors have asked for permission to name men from outside that in the 15-man list.

"All I can say is that I've never given up, never considered it to be the end.

"I won't give up until the moment they name the World Cup squad. I still very much want to be there and feel I could do a job for England," Gough said.

The Essex seamer says the inclusion of wicket-keeper Paul Nixon in the squad for the ongoing one-day series in Australia shows age will not count against him.

"They've just picked a 36-year-old debutant so why can't they pick me again at 36?" he added.

"If I'm in the final 15 after all that would be tremendous because I would never turn my back on my country."

England have until 13 February to reveal their 15-man squad for the Caribbean and have been told they do not have to choose from the original 30-man line-up.

"I was just seeking to clarify the situation and the ICC told me that you can more or less do what you want with the squad before February 13, provided that if you add someone you have to take someone out," chairman of selectors David Graveney said.

Gough is in Australia playing for an England veterans side in a beach cricket tournament.

My view is that he's not part of the future and therefore we move on

Angus Fraser

England's most prolific bowler in one-day history with 235 wickets, he last played in the drawn series with Pakistan five months ago.

Former England captain Graham Gooch told BBC Test Match Special that he would back Gough's inclusion in the World Cup squad.

"He would have to prove he's worth a place in the XI, but with his experience and ability to bowl at the end [of an innings] there's got to be a place in the squad for him.

"There's been a bit of a misunderstanding about his fitness and he needs to know what the England selectors are thinking.

"He's been training and playing beach cricket but that's not like playing one-day internationals and he needs to get himself in the best shape possible because if he does, he's still an effective performer," Gooch commented.

But former England seam bowler Angus Fraser, who played 42 one-day internationals and 46 Tests, said he felt Gough's time in international cricket was up.

"If you look at the way he's bowled in recent one-day internationals for England, he's conceded runs. My view is that he's not part of the future and therefore we move on," Fraser added.

Marcus Trescothick, who left the Ashes tour because of a stress-related illness, was another notable omission from the 30, named last month.

There has been no word on Trescothick's progress since he flew home from Australia in November or when he might be ready to make a comeback.
