Collingwood fell four short of his hundred as England finished on 293-5, still 354 runs behind Australia.

"We're still confident we can get something out of this game. We've still got one day left and you never know what can happen," said Collingwood.

"We can take a lot of confidence out of today. We've shown character and that we can compete against these guys."

Collingwood came to the crease with England tottering on 91-3 but put on a sometimes-thrilling 153 with Kevin Pietersen for the fourth wicket.

The Durham batsman was given a torrid time by pace bowler Stuart Clark when he first came in but played some tremendous attacking shots once he was set.

However, Collingwood was out for 96, coming down the track to Shane Warne and getting himself stumped by Adam Gilchrist.

"It was a tough spell against the new ball and once it was hitting the cracks it was doing a fair bit and I wasn't too sure where the runs were going to come from," said Collingwood.

"But I managed to hang in there, had a bit of luck and once the ball got a little bit softer it was a bit easier to play.

"Warney just tossed it up and teased me down the track and did me in the flight."

There had been some discussion before the match as to whether Collingwood should be batting at four, but he said he hoped he had answered any questions with his knock.
