Australia's 1972 victory at HQ has gone down in history as Bob Massie's match.

Massie made one of the most startling Test debuts recording the best-ever match figures at Lord's of 16-137.

He took eight wickets in each innings with a combination of excellent line, length and late swing as Australia won their first Test in over 30 months.

Greg Chappell chipped in with the second of his 24 Test centuries as Australia won their first Ashes match in 12 outings by eight wickets.

Massie's figures are the best by an Australian and are good enough for fourth in the world behind Jim Laker, Sydney Barnes and Narendra Hirwani, another debutant.

The 25-year-old's story was straight from the pages of Boy's Own.

Having been knocked back by Northamptonshire in 1970, following two nondescript games for their 2nd XI, few would have thought he would overshadow Dennis Lillee on his debut, let alone take 16 wickets.

Massie capitalised on the hostility of his new-ball partner, who took two wickets in each innings.

After a slow start with the bat England recovered, but a superb 131 from Chappell, supported by his brother Ian with an aggressive 56, gave Australia the advantage.

And this was hammered home by Massie as successive batsman were bemused by his accuracy and swerve second time around.

Australia needed only 81 to win, which they did comfortably, for the loss of two wickets.
