England team doctor Peter Gregory will leave his role in November. Gregory, who became the England and Wales Cricket Board's first chief medical officer in 2002, is resigning to do voluntary work in Romania.
Nick Peirce, who works for the English Institute of Sport in the east midlands region, will travel to India with the team for the ICC Champions Trophy.
"Cricket is a passion of mine and I have very much enjoyed my time working with the ECB," Dr Gregory said.
"The role has grown substantially over that period and has now become a full-time position involving a great deal of time away from home, both during the winter and the summer."
Meanwhile, the ECB has announced that Kirk Russell will be England's physiotherapist for the Champions Trophy and Ashes Test series, while Dean Conway will fill the role for the one-dayers in Australia and the World Cup.
Who will be team doctor for the Ashes and Gregory's replacement as chief medical officer has yet to be determined.
