England had lost the Ashes with four successive defeats but there was reason for over 10,000 travelling fans to celebrate as Australia were beaten at home for the first time in four years.

The match was certainly not one-sided, though, and there was an emotional century by Steve Waugh for Australia's band of Fanatics to enjoy.

England, who won the toss, overcame the unusual early dismissal of Michael Vaughan in the fourth over as Mark Butcher's 124 provided the backbone of their first innings.

When Butcher fell to the second new ball, Alec Stewart began a breezy 71 that made light of his advancing age and quieted the incessant calls for retirement.

Similarly, Waugh had been under pressure to call it a day with many believing his record-equalling 156th Test appearance, on his home ground, would be his last.

But the Aussie captain, who came in at 56-3 showed he had no intention of standing down as he advanced towards three figures at only slightly under a run a ball.

On 98, he hit a cover drive off the final ball of the day to equal Sir Donald Bradman's Australian record of 29 Test centuries.

The match was far from over there, as Adam Gilchrist crashed a century to give Australia a first-innings lead of a single run.

Vaughan returned to form with his third century of the series, going on to make 183.

Then it was the bowlers' turn as Andy Caddick ran through the Aussie order second time around.

The towering pace bowler exploited a crumbling pitch and a cavalier home side to take 7-94 for the first 10-wicket match haul of his Test career in what would turn out to be his final match.
