Australia's victory showed Donald Bradman at his best.

Having lost his first two Tests as captain, there were growing murmurs of discontent at his ability to lead the team.

And at 130-6 on the opening day, the Ashes looked to be slipping from Australia's grasp.

But Stan McCabe and Bert Oldfield staged a recovery before their bowlers made hay, with only three Englishmen reaching double figures.

On a hazardous track, each captain opted to declare their first innings closed for the first time in Test cricket.

And with the pitch still playing badly, Bradman pulled a masterstroke, sticking his tailenders up the order.

By the time he came to the wicket at 97-5, the scene was set.

Bradman shared a world record sixth-wicket partnership of 346 with Jack Fingelton, finishing with 270 - all while feeling under the weather.

England failed to match Bradman's mercurial efforts, facing a mammoth 689 to win and went on to lose the series as Australia completed the biggest comeback in Ashes history.
