Strauss stands firm as Pakistan celebrate what they think is a catch |
England captain Andrew Strauss praised the use of TV replays after receiving the benefit of the doubt at a key time in Friday's one-day win over Pakistan. Strauss had made only five when he edged to Inzamam at slip, but the catch was referred to third umpire Ian Gould who deemed the ball had not carried.
"Umpires generally have a good grasp but when they're uncertain that's what the third umpire's for," Strauss said.
"They should use the third umpire," added Strauss, who made a vital 78.
Given recent events over ball-tampering, the incident might have been seen as another inflammatory moment, but both teams were satisfied with the outcome.
Inzamam said: "We thought it was out but the umpires said it was not out. We thought the ball landed on my fingers but it is not easy for the umpires."
His opposite number Strauss empathised with the burly Pakistan figurehead and commented: "Sometimes at slip you're not sure. I had one in the Test series when I wasn't sure if it had carried - sometimes you don't know.
"The thing is I turned around and saw it and I was sure it hadn't carried, but at times like that it's up to the umpires and that's why I left it. Thankfully for me they did refer it."
It allowed Strauss to play an important innings as England reached their target of 236 with 22 balls to spare.
His team now have a chance of squaring the series in the final match at Edgbaston on Sunday and he said: "We're very happy. We've been putting in a lot of hard work over the last few months and things haven't worked out, but that sort of performance was the one we were looking for."
