Michael Yardy's display was an encouragement for England |
England captain Andrew Strauss admitted his team were short of runs as Pakistan clinched a five-wicket Twenty20 win. "The key was losing our middle order for so few runs. We had to consolidate and probably needed 30 or 40 more than we got," he said of England's 144-7.
But he was pleased with debutants Stuart Broad and Michael Yardy.
"They showed that they could rise to the occasion and play as they do for their counties so they put their names in the hat for the one-day series."
Strauss chose to bat first but was one of four wickets to fall for 11 runs in 19 balls at Bristol.
"I feel it was a pretty spirited performance by the guys, we just didn't have enough runs on the board," he concluded.
Shahid Afridi laid the platform for Pakistan with a blistering 10-ball 28 and says he might have found his natural home in Twenty20 cricket.
"In 20-over cricket it's like watching the highlights," the all-rounder said.
"I was pleased to perform because I was really struggling over the last couple of series with my batting. Twenty20 will make my career much longer!"
He added: "All our bowlers are fit now, I think this is our best side and we want to win the one-day series."
England and Pakistan head to Cardiff on Wednesday for the first of five one-day internationals.
